Tom Vogel interviews director George Snow on his new film Us Sinners.

Could you give us a basic spiel of your movie.
Us Sinners is a movie that’s brutally blunt in it’s portrayal of a young man Tim Connelly with serious issues. While all the characters in Us Sinners have issues, it’s how Tim deals with his problems that makes him a frightening realistic neighborhood serial killer.

What is your background in film?

I was expelled from High School in 76 (I’m old, but I still rock and roll). I bought Final Cut Pro to become an editor in 2004. Did you know, no one will trust their project to someone who has never edited before? So, I bought a little Sony camcorder and made some short movies that have been blasted to hell for being terrible. But, I did everything myself. I’m writer, director, cameraman, actor (couldn’t act my way out of a plastic bag), editor, sound-tracker. My favorite is called Exorcizing the Edit, which is about a loner who is held hostage by a masked gunman. Most of the terrible scenes have the two in the same frame. Well, everyone said my actors sucked. The thing none of them got was, I was both actors. How bad could I be, if no one realized they were both me?

How hard was it to get this project off the ground?
Getting the script right took a long time, years. But, once I decided to do it myself, it was actually very easy. Since I did most of the work myself, I only had me to answer to. My patience level is at an all-time low, so I push myself pretty hard.

With so many horror films out there why should we give yours a look it. What can you offer that the others cant?
Us Sinners is not your average horror movie. It doesn’t have your normal good and bad guy. Everyone has issues. Us Sinners offers a realistic and gruesome look at a serial killer who has some truly original ways of killing people. As a bonus Us Sinners offers a climax like nothing you’ve seen in years.

Some of the scenes in the film are quite confronting and graphic. Were you worried how people were going to take these scenes?
I was hoping viewers would be disturbed, and at the moment the majority are. Over the years there’s been a barrage of horror movies that are gross and bloody but do nothing emotionally to the viewer. This has desensitized audiences to violence. So, I was hoping to do things that would add a little realism to death. To a certain extent I think I achieved that. I’ve had quite a few e-mails from people who have thought the acting was terrific, but couldn’t watch the entire movie because it disturbed them too much. It’s funny because I thought that’s what horror movies are suppose to do, disturb you.

What are some of your favorite horror films? It seems that US SINNERS seems to have been influenced by PSYCHO and Carrie.
My favorites range from Chaney Sr’s Phantom and Hunchback (anything else this amazing actor does) to the classics of the Hollywood era. But, most importantly from Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer. I saw TCM in the theatres everyday for the entire run. There was nothing like it. It’s the only movie that I literally walked home looking behind me. It was GREAT. I took a woman who was going to sing for my band to see Henry. It was our first time hanging out and there was a sign at the box-office that said “Once you pay to see Henry, there will be no refunds”. We were excited. The movie did not let me down, she didn’t feel quite the same way. I think she said as we were leaving “Well, the title said it all”. Yes it did indeed.

Do you have any future projects planned?

I have two scripts ready that I want to shoot, and a third that I’m trying to sell. I’m still trying to get distribution that will pay me some money for Us Sinners and that’s taking up time. I’ve been offered the standard distribution deal. But, everyone worked hard on Us Sinners, so we all deserve to get paid.

Anything else you would like to add? Incidents on the set while filming, etc?
I could fill up pages to answer this, but I’ll stick with just one thing that I found completely fascinating. Melissa’s death scene was comprised of shots from 3 different states in 5 different counties. Melissa’s Exterior – West Babylon, NY Melissa’s backyard and kitchen – Manhattan NY (Melissa sitting in the backyard is actually the rooftop where she lives in NY) Tim going up the stairs and the baby’s room – Bridgeport CT (these were the very first scenes shot with the original DP. Who just happens to be the singer that went to see Henry with me all those years ago. Unfortunately, due to having children and a home life she had to leave the project just after it started) Melissa’s Bedroom – Iselin NJ (this is actually my bedroom, furniture everything. This is also Tim’s bedroom) Tim washing his hands – Brooklyn NY The way they blend in seamlessly is absolutely amazing to me.

Writer/Directors Michael Roesch and Peter Scheerer on ALONE IN THE DARK 2.

Before we talk about Alone in the Dark 2, could we get a little background? How did you guys meet each other? When did you become producing partners?

Michael: We know each other from school, became friends and started to shoot our first short movie when we were 12 years old.

Peter: Later we started to write scripts, and to our own surprise we were able to sell them all. We were really lucky with that.

Could you please give us a basic run down of Alone in the Dark 2?

Peter: Edward Carnby, the main character in the series, joins forces with a group of witch hunters, to track down the dangerous witch Elisabeth Dexter.

Michael: We thought that it would be interesting to have a real dangerous witch as the opponent for our hero.

How did you approaching the new film? Will it be a reboot like with HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2 or a direct follow on?

Michael: It will be a complete reboot. The producers and we agreed that it would be the best to start completely from the beginning – with a new story, and new characters.

Peter: Our idea was to tell a story more with suspense then with big action sequences. One of the reasons for this decision was also that we have a much smaller budget.

I understand you wrote the first movie under less than favorable circumstances. What was the production like this time around?

Peter: There were two main problems: We had only 8 weeks to write the script, what was too short. The second problem was that one of the producers brought another writer in, who wrote a complete different script. And then they mixed both scripts together, what was just not working.

Michael: In the end there was not much left from our script in the end. But this happens in Hollywood very often. I think this is one of the main reasons why most screenwriters want to direct their own movies sooner or later.

Here a B MOVIE NEWS we’re shamelessly pro Uwe Boll. What is he like to work with?

Michael: Uwe is one of the nicest and most loyal persons you ever meet. He is a good friend.

Peter: Yes, he is a very nice person. And you can learn a lot from him.

I have to say I’m very impressed with the cast of this movie. It’s like a genre lovers dream. You have Lance Henriksen, Bill Moseley, Ralf Moeller, Danny Trejo, Michael Pare, and to a lesser extent Zack Ward, Natessia Malthe and the delighful P.J. Soles. Have you got any amusing or embarrassing stories you would like to share.

Michael: We were really happy to get this great cast. Fortunately the agents and actors really liked our script. But with so many genre stars, which all have a very tight schedule, is was really hard to schedule the shooting.

Peter: On one day Ralf Moeller came to LA from a 12 hour flight from Europe, and we needed him to shoot for another 10 hours, to get the schedule done.

As Uwe Boll’s name is attached to this film there are going to be legions of “obese, virgin, wanna be filmmaker, imdb registered, fan boys” who are going to hate it for that reason without judging it on its own merits? How do you prepare yourself for something like that?

Michael: We hope that the audience takes a new look on the franchise, and sees that we restarted the franchise.

Peter: We knew the critics can’t get much worse. But if you are making movies, you have to live with that.

Video games movies have always had a stigma attached to them. If it’s possible to talk in such board terms what do you think the strength and weakness of adapting video games are?

Peter: The strength is more from a marketing standpoint, then from the creative side. Producers buy the rights for video games as they know that they will get a lot of attention. Video game based movies sell much more DVD´s then non-video game movies with the same budget.

Michael: The weakness is for sure that the storylines of the most video games are not usable for movies. It seems easy, but in reality it is often very difficult to make a game story work in a movie.

I understand you have another movie called Brotherhood of Blood. Could you quickly give us the spiel about that?

Michael: “Brotherhood of Blood” was our first movie as directors, we shot it before “Alone in the Dark 2″. It is a vampire movie, Victoria Pratt, Sid Haig and Ken Foree are the lead actors. We had a very low budget, but we were really lucky as all the actors liked the script much, so that we could get this great cast even with our very low budget.

Peter: The movie will be released on October 14th in the US, on November 3rd in the UK, and in Australia and New Zealand in June 2009. We were really lucky regarding the US release. “Brotherhood of Blood” was one of the first movie Sam Raimi picked up for his new label GHOST HOUSE UNDERGROUND at Lionsgate. It was really an honor that Sam Raimi liked our movie.

Previous to this you’ve made action films in a horror setting; will Brotherhood of Blood be more of a straight horror movie?

Peter: “Brotherhood of Blood” is more like an horror-thriller.

Michael: We had a very low budget, so we knew that we couldn´t do big action sequences.

Ok, I’ll give you one last chance to pimp out your film. In one sentence why should we watch it?

Michael: Lance Henricksen, Bill Moseley and Danny Trejo fight a badass witch. Don´t miss it!

Comedian, Rudy Ray Moore passed away last Sunday at the age of 81. Moore was best known as the fly talking, machine gun wield, motherfucker fucking, DOLEMITE (1975).Moore isn’t a logical choice for a blackploitation action hero. He’s a little over weigh yet he wears skin tight clothes. He isn’t that great at kung fu yet has multiple fight scenes. He is a fly pimp yet he isn’t that good looking. He cant act as much is much as his has on screen charisma. This shouldn’t work, but for whatever it dose and its amazingl. Moore It death was due to a complicated with diabetes. He had just finished production on his final Dolemite movie THE DOLEMITE EXPOSITION.

Leigh Scott has just wrapped a new called CHROME ANGELS. Scott isn’t revealing much at the moment other than it’s a sci-fi, action, comedy. Scott comments on the film “We got to do things that only the big budget guys get to do (like ride Harleys through shopping malls and shoot gunfights inside grocery stores).” It will feature Paul Le Mat (as the villain), Richard Lynch, and a few of his regular actors, Eliza Swenson, Kristen Quintrall, Rhett Giles, and Griff Furst. I actually know the movie’s premise, I’m not going to tell you but trust me it’s FREAKING COOL! It combines two great genera’s together. CHROME ANGELS looks like it should satisfy both mainstream and genera audiences. Stay tune as next week Scott will be revealing trailers and some big, big news!

Director Keith Crocker shoots the breeze about his new film Blitzkrieg: Escape From Stalag 69, naked girls and gore.

B MOVIE NEWS: How about we start with a little background info. Who are you and why am I talking to you?

KEITH: Actually, I’m a nobody and your talking to me because I made a movie called Blitzkrieg.

B MOVIE NEWS: What first got you interested in filmmaking?

KEITH: When you come from a big family (I have six siblings) the way to keep the kiddies entertained was to stick them in front of the TV and turn on Chiller Theater. Hence I was exposed to all the classic horror movies (the Universal Studios films of the 30s and 40s). At first the stuff scared me, later it became my mental anguish release. I started shooting Super 8mm horror films in the late seventies and I never turned back.

B MOVIE NEWS: Nazisploitation themed comedies really are an untapped market. Could give us a little background on the project?

KEITH: Back when I was a projectionist in the mid nineties one of the films I was projecting was Schindlers List. My natural reaction was to shoot a trailer for a movie to be called Schindlers Lust. Anyhow, the trailer got shot but the feature never did. Around 2004 an ex co-worker of mine approached me about starting up the project again. Well, I did start it up, and hence here we are.

B MOVIE NEWS: Could you give us a basic run down of the plot?

It’s really the story of Charles Manson only transposed to WWII Europe. Helmet Schultz has been denied an education in medicine because his mother thinks he’s an idiot. Because his family has political connections, he gets a job as head commandant of a prisoner of war camp. He decides to start practicing surgery on prisoners who don’t need it. The American, British and Russian prisoners decide they don’t like this guy playing doctor and revolt. The Manson story is similar in that he was denied a career in music by Terry Melcher and decided to teach Melcher a lesson only the wrong people were in the Melcher house.

B MOVIE NEWS: Your film boggles my mind, but in a good way. Firstly how did you convince anyone to be in a movie that basically a humorous homage to the most tasteless genera known to mankind? Was it a hard sell? And secondly how did you convince several buxom lasses to bear all and get mutilated? Are you the most charismatic director alive?

Actually, the sell wasn’t as hard as you think because these poor actors are sick and tired of stupid slasher movies and zombie movies. The crap they are being offered destroys creativity, hence they hopped at this. Half the cast is European so they took the subject very seriously. Regarding the nude women, well, let me let you in on a secret. For some strange reason, every time I’m around women they take their clothing off, and this is without provocation. When I was a kid, I’d walk down the hall in High School and all the girls would drop their pants. When we auditioned this film, the girls took the pants, blouses and bras off and came into the interview nude! And some of these girls didn’t even have nude scenes!!!! The only person I can’t get to take her cloths off lately is my wife, she even wears clothing to bed, I don’t understand…

B MOVIE NEWS: Now I have to say I’ve seen horror movies that have less gut wrenching gore than your ‘comedy’. Did you know it would have that impact from the beginning? Or did it just happen along the way? I almost had to use the complementary barf bag that came with the press kit. :p

KEITH: Oh, I honestly believe that if you use gore you better make it hurt. The violence in my movie is supposed to make you feel it, this isn’t kids stuff, pain is real and gore should not be used irresponsibly. I want each and every barf bag filled to the brim. War ain’t pretty my friend!

B MOVIE NEWS: What was the production like? How long did the entire process take? Have you got any amusing stories from the set you would like to share?

The production was both Heaven and Hell. We had great days, we had shit days. The movie was made for a dime, so luxury was short, but I don’t know what luxury is so I didn’t miss it. The film took a year and a half to make because everyone has day jobs hence we shot on weekends and some week nights. Funny stories, shit, I could write a fucking joke book. One of my favorite bloopers was when my actress Brenda, who was playing a girl named Lucille, was supposed to be talking about another character and instead accidentally kept referencing her own character. I let her do the whole take that way because it gave me such a laugh, I corrected her once she was done.

B MOVIE NEWS: How and where can we get this film?

KEITH: Right now we have been blessed with limited theatrical showings but the DVD will be ready by the end of November ’08. It will be available through Amazon, the WildEye Website, and various DVD and video markets. It should be getting a varied and wide distribution on DVD.

B MOVIE NEWS: I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention could you repeat that information again :p

KEITH: Yes, if your tooth falls out, put it under your pillow and go to sleep. When you wake up, the tooth fairy will have replaced your tooth with a Blitzkrieg DVD!

B MOVIE NEWS: What has the reaction been like?

KEITH: Genre folks, who get it, love it. Mainstream folks respect it, because it is ambitious, but they don’t quite like it. Audiences who see it in the theater seem to really dig it, they talk back at the screen, laugh, scream, vomit…it’s really gratifying to see it theatrically.

B MOVIE NEWS: What’s next for you?

KEITH: Not quite sure yet, but I know my next film will feature an all midget cast.

B MOVIE NEWS: Ok I’m going to end with another chance for you to pimp out your film?

Asylum updates are my favorite time of the B Movie calendar. I got a little shock to see they’re slate for next year. Either they are cutting down on the mockbuster or I’m just out of touch with mainstream cinema. I kind of think the latter one might be the case. But first lets see what this year has in stall for us. Last month saw DEATH RACERS. When it comes to genera films I never think it’s a good idea to judge the film on it cinematic metric rather by the sheer entertainment value it provides. DEATH RACERS provided to be one the funnies movies I’ve seen all year. What it lacked in Racers it made up for in Death and satire. Its one of the better Asylum films every made. Hitting the shelves this month is a movie that’s both a Faith Film and a Mockbuster. Get ready for the SUNDAY SCHOOL MUSICAL. Some people say this movie will start the cinematic Armageddon but I’m just hoping for some toe taping tunes.

B MOVIE NEWS will have an exclusive interview with director Rachel Goldenberg (exclusive for the fact we probably are going to only people to ask her). They’re going to finish out the year with a show stopper… literally! December will bring THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED. It will star not one but two 80’s brat packers: C. Thomas Howell (who also directs) and Judd Nelson (CYBER DOG). The new year will start with a mockbuster variation with the 18 YEAR OLD VIRGIN. With the influxes of dvd sequel I’m pretty sure they’re trying to disgust this as one. I can see the tag line already “Before he was 40 he was the…” Can you see too many teen sex comedies? I think not!

The most interesting films in the post production pile are:

MEGA SHARK VS GIANT SQUID

The California coast is terrorized by two enormous prehistoric sea creatures as they battle each other for supremacy of the ocean.

Finally, we’re going to get some answers. You can’t say you haven’t spent sleeping nights doing the math’s on this one. I’m putting my money on Giant Squid.

TRANSMORPHERS 2

In this present day prequel, the robot invaders attack Earth, forcing a small band of humans to seek refuge below the surface of the planet.

I known about the film for quite a while as, I try to get a job writing it. Having no idea about writing, pitching, spelling or Hollywood in general I just decided to write it then email it to David Latt. As my version was an “INVASION OF THE POD PEOPLE … umm I mean BODY SNATCHERS” type sequel and this is a prequel I don’t think they went with it. But it still can be used (hint, hint David Latt). You can read it here. I wrote it to be the most mocking’est buster every to bust a mock. If you think you’ve seen it in another film you have :p

Once again I’m sure these films are mocking into bigger Hollywood film that I’m just not aware of. The last two seem like to same film.

If you ask me the greatest Australian film of all time isn’t GALLIPOLI, or PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, it’s MAD MAX 2, or THE ROAD WARRIOR was my American friends call it. No other Australian film has affected the world of cinema like it did. It also established a new genera (Post Apocalyptic) which isn’t a claim a lot of films can lay claim to. While Mad Mad 2 is the better film I personally like the first one a lot more. MAD MAX to MAD MAX 2 is what ALIEN was to ALIENS. The first one was darker and more intense. While it was a fantasy film it capture something uniquely Australian. This is the only thing more rugged than our landscape is our attitudes. On top of that, Max was a new kind of Australian ‘hero’. He wasn’t a bogan (or a red neck as you might call them), he was a failed samurai, a lone wolf and untimely he became the man with no name. He survives due to his brain and not his gun and revenge wasn’t beneath him. Heck, even the bad guy is pretty smart and articulate. I’m hard pressed to think of another Australian icon who isn’t a bogan or known for fighting crocodiles. The weekend of the October 10 – 12 there is going to be a Mad Max weekend at Little River. Little River is where most of the film was shot.

CULT MELB: ROLLER DERBY GIRLS INVADE MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a city that thrives on underground sub cultures. The most exciting one to emerge over the last few years is the Victorian Women’s Roller Derby League. Now I hear you asking, “What’s on earth is a Roller Derby? It sounds like its something from a Happy Day rerun?” Well it very well could be. To find out more I interviewed a mysterious woman that goes by the stage name of Tonka (yes, just like the toy) who is the Victoria Roller Derby spokeswoman. “The sport was really popular from 1930 to 1970′s then interests started to waned as roller rinks were became redundant… in 2001 a bunch of ladies in Texas decided to revitalize the sport and bring it back into the popular culture… We started the Victorian Roller Derby league last year in February. The response has been tremendous. At our last bout we had 1000 people come watch”.

Tonka explains the rules, “You have ten skaters, five from each team on the track at any particular time. The idea is to get your jammer, who is the point scorer through the pack and score as many times within a two-minute jam period”. Tonka continues, “If you’re a female and are interested in joining you can contact via our webpage for more information… we have fresh meat which for new skaters to come on board. They have a three-month probationary period. It’s about a year before someone is fit enough to get up to a public game… It’s a huge dedication involved, just not in terms of the training but also all the other factors. It’s a skater owned and operated organization so we wear multiple hats. We do all out own coaching and reefing. There is a huge investment of time of training and the expectation that’s on people that actually became apart of it all.

Tonka finished with the advantages of Roller Derby over tradition sports. “It is something that’s a little left of centre. It’s very Melbourne in terms grassroots nature of the sport itself. It’s something you can have a hand in shaping for future generations in terms of the running of the organization and the league itself. You wouldn’t necessarily have those options available to you in your local netball team. It also teaches women to take care of themselves, and to be assertive. It’s okay to knock someone down, it’s not a personal thing. There are not too many sports in which you can do that, then giggle with them about it later … It’s very empowering in term of the physical aggression and the energy that’s put into the sport itself.”

NEWS: CIRIO SANTIAGO RIP (Reposted from 29th of September 2008)

Cult filmmaker and long time Roger Corman collaborator Cirio Santigao passed away two nights ago at the Makati Medical Center in the Philippines. He was 73 and died from lung cancer. According to a the Inquirer he was taken hospital on the 18th as he had trouble breathing. His sister Digna commented that he been very depressed since the lost of his son Cyril. Who died from testicular cancer six months ago. He only recently told his family of his sickness as he didn’t want to alarm them. As previously reported Santiago health has been failing for the past year. He recently had to leave the set of Road Raiders as he was too sick to continue. ROAD RAIDER is sequel to his 1983 film STRYKER. He is survived by wife Annabelle; children Christopher, Cathy, Claudine and Cirio Jr.; and siblings Digna and Danilo. Cirio was cremated last Friday. Santiago is best known for this work in the genera’s of Blacksplotation, Women in Prison, Post Apocalyptic and Vietnam war movies. He passing is a great lost to the film community. He will be greatly missed.

Things are changing around the WWE. According to there website they have a NEW NAME, NEW LOCATION and a NEW FOCUS. The name is WWE Studio, the location is 11400 West Olympic Blvd, Suite 800, Los Angeles, CA 90064 and focus is a ?!! Better Films? Maybe this has something to do with the replacement of there head of the studio. The man who was behind (ironically named) THE CONDEMNED failure. They’re current slate will include two big screen ($10 – 20 Million) movies and half a dozen ($5 Million) d2dvd movies a year. This is a respectable amount of movies for any new studio but Vince McMahon has his eye set a little higher. McMahon feels its time for them to make mega summer blockbuster.

According to an internet rumor he had his heart set on the new Conan movie to be a WWE studio production with Triple H in the lead. Sadly for the world of art this is not happening at this stage. With any luck they might back a Conan dvd sequel. But we can look forward to:

BEHIND ENEMY LINES: COLUMBIA (2009): This first offering is a co-production with 20 Century Fox and the third installment of the unrelated BEHIND ENEMY LINES franchise. This time around the plot will revolve around a Navy SEALS who mount an attack on Colombian Special Forces to clear their names and rescue a hostage. This will feature Mr “I don’t do steroids yet fail steroid tests” Kennedy.

Up next is 12 ROUNDS: John Cena will star as Detective Danny Baxter. According to myspace “When New Orleans Police detective Danny Baxter stops a brilliant thief from getting away with a multi-million-dollar heist, the thief’s girlfriend is accidentally killed. After escaping from prison, the criminal mastermind enacts his revenge, taunting the cop with a series of near-impossible puzzles and tasks -12 rounds- that Baxter must somehow complete to save the life of his own fiancee.” It sounds a little Die Hard 3-ish. That’s fine as Die Hard 3 was great! Talking about Die Hard the director Renny Harlin directed part 2. This film is currently in post production.

JOURNEY OF THE DEAD MAN (2009) aka JORNADA DEL MUER. This is a very curious film indeed. Not much is know about the film other than its a “modern-day Western where gangs, drug trafficking and broken codes of honor rule.” The phase Journey of the Dead Man is of given to a dry, uninhabitable 100mile stretch of road found in Mexico. These two pieces of information is enough to get me very excited about this film, but this is just the start. The director is John “I LOVE GUNS” Milius. If you don’t know who he is, you will certainly know his resume. He was responsible for writer or co-writing such films and tv as ROME (2005), CLEAR AND PERSENT DANGER (1994), CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982), APOCALYPSE NOW (1979). JAWS (1975), MAGNUM FORCE (1973), JEREMIAH JOHNSON (1972) and DIRTY HARRY (1971). The cast and character list is pretty interesting: Mark McGrath as Sugar Ray Leonard, Charles Barkley as Sparky the wonder Dog, Bob Howard (Hardcore Holly) as Jar Jar Blinks and Marco Mero as his alter ego Johnny B Baddd. The movie will also feature Dan Hedaya and Triple H. No other information is known at this time.

A CHANCE FOR BOTH BARRELS: A mercenary wants to bring a killer to justice. This script was acquired from John Heffernan who was the man who penned the timeless classic SNAKES ON A PLANE (2006). The film is currently being tailored to use a yet to me named WWE wrestler.

THE MARINE 2 (2010): It seems that John Cena is the muse of WWE Studos. He will be coming back for this d3dvd sequel. Now word of the plot yet… but who cares. The first film wasn’t a plot orientation film as much as an explosion orientated one.

SUCKER PUNCH: This is a bare knuckle boozing film starring the 7’2, 440 lbs Paul Wight aka The Big Show. One can only assume it’s going to be a fighting torment movie. I’m going to go out on a limb and say Wight might be the bad guy as I would have to imagine how big the bad guy would be if he wasn’t. The could possible be theatrical release.

No word yet of there tv programs but like always I’ll keep up updated.
